Telling Tales

Congratulations to Jonny Jones and Jake Latham from Saffron Walden County High School, winners of our recent Ovid competition for local secondary schools. More than 1000 Year 7 students from 5 schools came up with their own take on stories from the Metamorphoses and entries included a stop animation video of Theseus and the Minotaur, a mimed retelling of King Midas and the Golden Touch, and a horror film trailer for Pandora’s Box. The winning entry, however, was a pottery medallion of Theseus and the Minotaur.

The competition is part of an initiative set up by the Cambridge School Classics Project (CSCP) to promote classics in state schools. Working with two professional storytellers, Hugh Lupton and Daniel Morden, CSCP has created a web site with downloadable versions of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, selected stories from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and a collection of Aesop’s fables for use in English lessons at upper primary and lower secondary level.
