Choose a College

One of the most common questions Cambridge applicants ask us at the Faculty is, “what College should I apply to?”

The first thing to say is that everybody usually ends up happy with their College and most Cambridge students will happily tell you that their College is the best in Cambridge, no matter whether it was their first choice or not. Also, all Colleges in Cambridge take students studying Classics. What’s more you don’t have to choose a College if you don’t want to. You can make an Open Application and you will be assigned a College by a computer. We also work very hard to make sure that whichever College you apply to your application will have the same chances of success.

Cambridge has 29 Undergraduate Colleges and they are all unique. A few only take female students or mature applicants, so if that is relevant to you that might be something to consider. Some are small, some are large, some are in the centre of Cambridge others further out, some are old, some are modern. The best thing to do is to do a bit of preliminary investigation by exploring the Colleges’ websites and then come on an Open Day to Cambridge and see them for yourselves.

Most of our Sixth-Form days at the Faculty of Classics will provide you with an opportunity to visit a College, or if you prefer you can look on the main university website to find out when the University and College Open Days are.
