The metamorphosis from man to god - deification in the ancient world and beyond We decided we wanted to talk about metamorphosis in the ancient world, but not in the conventional way by analysing one of Ovid's beloved stories. Instead we decided to talk about one of our favourite subjects - Alexander the Great. Specifically, we wanted to delve deep into the concept of religion, apotheosis and deification in the ancient world. we started off first simply exploring Alexander's deification as the son of Ammon-Zeus, but then became extremely interested in the concept of the divine right to rule and the effects this can have on the people's opinions of a ruler- the cultural impact of being a god, politically and religiously. we chose the podcast format as we both loved the chatty, conversational tone we could utilize (even though we did come prepared with some notes), and the fact that it gave us more time to explore a wide range of ideas.
